Finding Contractors and Interior Designers in New York Just Got Easier!
New Drop-Down Menus on the MothershipHappy Labor Day, Gang. Before the long weekend, we thought we'd take a second to show off the new drop-down menus on cityhammer.com, New York's #1 Remodeling Directory.
Lot's of visitors have requested a way to sort each service category by borough or county to help them narrow down their search when looking for plumbers, movers, painters etc. The web team sprang into action and the site now offers New Yorkers and New Jersey-ites (we made that up, don't try to steal it) two ways to find them. You can search all areas or narrow down the list of pro's to just the area you live in.
For example, when you roll your mouse over "Flooring", you can choose to see all of the flooring companies listed on cityhammer.com or just the flooring companies that service Westchester or Brooklyn.
Take it for a test drive, and as always, if you have feedback on how we can further improve the site and make it easier to use, we're all ears.
Use the contact page here: Contact cityhammer.com
Wear plenty of sunblock, we'll see you in September!

The New York Times Goes Shopping for Design Books
The Pacific Design Center in LA, home of Potterton BooksEvery designer has different sources of inspiration, be it a color they saw at a runway show or the set design of a classic movie. In the case of Kelly Wearstler, a Los Angeles based designer, inspiration comes in the form of old, out-of-print design and architecture books she finds in specialty stores like Potterton Books (New York location is at 3rd Ave between 58th and 59th).
Potterton Books specializes in architectural books and in this New York Times article by Kimberly Stevens, Kelly Wearstler is shopping at the location in the Pacific Design Center in LA.
As a designer of resorts and residences, as well as accessories and home furnishings, Ms. Wearstler is also a healthy consumer of vintage books and discusses the concept of design book collecting being similar to buying works of art.
She found the illustrations and architectural renderings in “The Bathroom: A New Interior,” published in 1931, so inspirational that she designed a bathroom in her own home based on one of the drawings. And in “The Hermès Shop Windows,” she couldn’t get enough of the unusual finishes and hand-crafted objects. “I have these moments when I’m flipping through a book and a page is so visually compelling — an idea just strikes me,” she said.
To get an idea of some of the books she's into right now, check out the article: Click Here

NY Home Improvement Blog Patrol
Photo by Tony the MisfitThe team at Real LI, the real estate blog for Newsday, has the scoop on a designer showdown happening in Montauk at the new Panoramic View Residences. The contest, co-sponsored and organized by Traditional Home Magazine and the New York School of Interior Design, will give three extremely lucky interior design students the chance to spend their internships out east decorating luxury villas. Newsday says there'll be a TV show later this year with the results.
Oceans 3: Showhouse Showdown
Everyone wants a home office, but lots of us are constrained by the space available, especially in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Remodelista's got a wall-mounted desk that just might hold a solution. Designed by MASH Studios, the desk comes in both English Walnut or European Birch Plywood, each with its own unique finish. Great pic's available, too.

They're finally here! What is? UrbanDigs' fabled charts have hit the web after a long and arduous journey to the internet. The amount of depth and data in these charts should give real estate pro's and geeks alike plenty to play with for a long time to come. You can see charts built with data such as:
NEW LISTINGS/CONTRACTS SIGNED
PRICE REDUCTIONS
TOTAL INVENTORY
This is more transparency that prospective buyers and sellers are getting anywhere on the internet and could prove to be an indispensable tool in the hunt for the truth in New York real estate. Rock on, Noah. Congrats!
Oooooh Mama! Did Someone Say Charts?

An Idea for Your Inner Color Freak
Yes, they actually put this show on DVDFrom the Great White North (yes, Canada) comes an idea for everyone's inner color freak, that pent up personality inside of us that occasionally wants to strip the neutral tones off every wall and go all-Punky Brewster on our interiors...
Writing for the Globe and Mail, Colour and Design Consultant Janice Lindsay has a great article on using areas like stairwells, garages, and the inside of closets to go color-crazy. There are some cool ideas mentioned by different designers, like painting the ceiling of a walk-in closet red, for a touch of boldness.
The story of the Swiss Embassy in London keeping an underground parking garage as a secret graffiti gallery is worth the click over...
